GEORGE GARLAND


 

George Garland came to America with the king's army during the revolutionary war, and served throughout the contest. Mr. Garland settled on White Oak run, in Bethel, on land now owned by Henry L. Garland, where he died about 1825. His children were Nicholas, Jacob, Susan, George, Catharine, David, Rachel, and Elizabeth all now dead but Rachel. George Garland, son of George, Sr., was born and reared in Bethel township on the old homestead. In 1835 he bought out the rest of the heirs, paying two hundred and sixty dollars for two hundred and fifty acres. He died in 1870. His wife (nee Mary Hill) is living, aged 72.They reared eight children, six of whom are living. Lemuel Garland followed daily labor and school-teaching until 1867, when he purchased a farm of two hundred and twelve acres in Belfast township. He married Harriet Truax in 1857. Mr. Garland served one term as county auditor. He was elected to that office in 1871."

 He was a Major in the Revolutionary War under General George Washington, (19 April 1775/ 3 September 1783). George served in the Border war of 1816. George Garland came to America about 1774/1775.
"George Garland settled on White Oak Run in Bethel Township, in Fulton County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Friend, the oldest daughter of Nicholas and Maria Elizabeth Friend. They were the parents of twelve children, their names and dates of birth were taken from the original pages of the Garland Family Bible. 
"George Garland pledged allegiance to the Province of Pennsylvania at the Bedford County courthouse on 7 July 1777.
"George Garland's will was made in 1827 and recorded in 1829.
"The 1790 census of Bethel Township has George Garland with one male over 16 (George), one male under 16 (Nicholas) and two females (Elizabeth and Martha Ann)."

George Garland was born before 1755.  He died in Bethel Twp., Bedford County, PA.  He married Elizabeth Friend.  On 27 Feb 1793 George was issued a Warrant from the commonwealth of Pennsylvania for fifty acres of land in Bethel Twp., Bedford County (now Fulton County), adjoining land of his father-in-law, Nicholas Friend.

1. Martha Ann Garland   B. 14 Oct. 1785 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA

2. Susanna Garland  B. 8 Jan 1807 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA

3. Rachel Garland  B. 9 June 1809  at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA  She married Joseph Jacob Winters on 20 Feb 1828 at Bedford County, PA.. She died on 17 Oct 1888 at Bedford County, PA, at age 79.  She was buried on 21 Oct 1888 at Cedar Grove Christian Church Cemetery, Fulton County, PA  

4. David Garland  B. 8 Sept 1811 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA  He married Mary "Polly" Hill on 14 April 1833 at Bedford County, PA.  He died on 25 Feb 1871 at age 59.  He was buried on 28 Feb 1871 at Hills Chapel Cemetery, Fulton County, PA

5. Nicholas Garland  B. 11 Dec 1789 in PA  He married Barbara Steele, 1795-1860, abt. 1794.  He died 1850 in PA. 

6. Elizabeth Garland  B. 18 Dec 1791 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA 

7. Jacob Garland  B. 16 Jan 1794 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA  He married Rebecca Fisher, daughter of Jacob Fisher and Mary, circa 1819.  He died on 6 Nov 1874 at age 80.  He was buried 9 Nov 1874 at Sidling Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Fulton County, PA

8. Catherine Garland  B. 18 Jan 1796 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA  She married Nicholas Plessinger, son of Conrad Plessinger and Catherine Margaaret Sommer, circa 1819.  She died on 23 Jan 1880 at age 84.  She was buried on 26 Jan 1880 at Cedar Grove Christian Church Cemetery, Fulton County, PA.

9. George Garland  B. 24 Dec 1797 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA.  He died on 28 Dec 1862 at age 65. He was buried on 31 Dec 1880 at Hills Chapel Cemetery, Fulton County, PA.

10. Julianna Garland  B. 12 Jan 1800 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA  

11. Daniel Garland  B. 18 May 1802 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA

12. Abraham Garland  B. 16 Nov 1804 at Bethel Twp, Needmore, Bedford County, PA
