Marygarland.jpg (69265 bytes) Mary "Polly" Garland Hess, Mother's maternal great-grandmother. She raised her family alone after the death of her husband, Benjamin. During the late 19th century, this was not an easy task.

The next few pictures were  provided by Barbara Allison, also a descendant of Mary Hess, and the author of "Supplement to the Hess Family in America". Thanks Barbara for the wonderful pictures and all your kind help.

Some wonderful photos of the Friend-Garland house, the family home of Mary "Polly" Garland Hess. There is even a beautiful old barn on the property.

These photos were taken recently and contributed by Arley Meadows.  Thanks so much Arley.

dollyhoward.jpg (41338 bytes)

Mother's aunt, Dolly Howard Kabel  This picture and the next six were given to Mother by her Aunt Ollie, Olive Cramer Howard Kabel Taylor.
dollyhoward2.jpg (30836 bytes)

Dolly Howard was married to Ben Kabel.  She was killed, along with her brother, Benjamin Howard, in a boiler explosion in Arizona in 1913. Some time after the death of Dolly and her brother, Benjamin, their spouses, Olive Cramer Howard and Ben Kabel married each other.

norah-ethelene.jpg (28533 bytes)

The older girl is Mother's aunt, Cnorah Howard Montgomery.  The younger girl is Ethelene Cramer, sister to Mrs. Olive Howard Kabel.  It was taken about 1914.

noraholivefrankie.jpg (21377 bytes)

This is a wonderful picture.  It's Cnorah Howard, Baby Frankie Tudor, who was Mother's cousin, and Mrs. Olive Howard.  I think these pictures came to Mother from Olive Howard. Olive Howard was married to Benjamin Lawrence Howard who was killed in a boiler explosion, along with his sister, Dolly, in Arizona in 1913. Some time after the death of Benjamin and his sister, Dolly, Olive Howard and Ben Kabel married each other.

nora-olive.jpg (21880 bytes)  Cnorah and Olive
Aren't they stylish??

olive_howard_kabel.jpg (58920 bytes)

Olive Cramer Howard Kabel  The locket Olive is wearing was a gift to her from Benjamin Lawrence Howard.  It is a much loved possession of Olive and Ben Kabel's daughter, Martha Say.

tudors.jpg (20367 bytes)

Olive Howard, Frankie Tudor, Cnorah Howard, and Ernest Tudor   I'm not sure who Ernest Tudor was.  Frankie's father was John Tudor.  Frankie's mother was Martha Belle Howard, sister to Dolly, Benjamin, Cnorah, Barbara, and our grandmother, Mary Howard.

barbcharwed.jpg (41788 bytes)

Mother's Aunt Barbara Howard and Charles Copas on their wedding day, September 15, 1895.

These Copas photos were graciously provided by Dr. Cheryl Copas.  I thank her so much for them.  I will treasure them always.

CHRSLFAM.jpg (57101 bytes)

The family of Barbara Howard Copas taken some time after her death. Visible on the wall behind is an image of Barbara on her wedding day and her daughter, Laura Belle, who died in 1912.  I believe the others are L to R back row, Luther C., Iva Lorain, William Franklin, Eugene M., and Letha.  Front row L to R Loy Olin, Charles Raymond, Charles Russell (husband of Barbara), and Teelie Ray.  Teelie and Letha are twins.

bert_jim.jpg (42028 bytes)

This is Bert, Jim... Mom's only full brother... and Jim's daughter, Louise with her kids. Uncle Jim's real name was Perry Morton O'Bryan.

curtis_lilly_louise.jpg (51819 bytes)

Uncle Curtis, probably with his great-grandson.

   earl.jpg (27953 bytes)
Earl O'Bryan
Curtis, Earl, and Robert were all Mother's half brothers.

robert.jpg (20875 bytes)

Robert O'Bryan   Robert was the youngest in the family.  Mother always said he was a good dancer. He was apparently ahead of his time......if you look closely, he's wearing an earring.

milesalleepic.jpg (89605 bytes) From the "History of Moniteau County", page 296.  Moniteau County Officers   Front row, first on the left, Miles Allee, brother of Elizabeth Allee Howard and great uncle of Ellen O'Bryan.

I have recently come in contact with the daughter of Olive and Ben Kabel, Martha Say.  She was kind enough to provide me with copies of the next few pictures and some very interesting information about her mom and dad and the relationship they had with our ancestors, the Howards.  Martha's mom and dad were my mother's aunt and uncle by marriage to Dolly and Benjamin "Lawrence" Howard.

wdhoward.jpg (42150 bytes)

This is Olive Cramer Howard and William David Howard with his mules.  This is the only picture I have ever seen of W.D. Howard. I'm guessing he would have been about 60 years old when this was taken.  Thank you so much, Martha!!

dolly_benkabel.jpg (60937 bytes)

This wonderful picture is Ben Kabel, Dolly Howard (Mother's aunt and Ben's wife), Bob Beetle, Sallie Tudor Kabel, and Newt Kabel.  I'm not sure who Bob Beetle was, but his wife was also killed in the train boiler explosion and he seemed to be a very close friend to the Howards and Kabels.

lawrence_olive.jpg (129271 bytes)

The wedding portrait of Benjamin Lawrence Howard and Olive Cramer.
