Below are some great scanned pictures sent to us by a very kind lady in Missouri
named Tammy. It seems she found these pictures, three of which are marked
as James McDowell and Mary Susan McDowell. She found them in
Lafayette county and really put a lot of effort into finding their
family. Unfortunately, the originals along with a box full of
other pictures got lost during a move. We are thrilled and fortunate to have
these scanned images of them. Thank you so very much, Tammy, for
all your efforts to return these pictures to us. We appreciate it
more than you will ever know. ~ Linda ~
In 1997 my sister Jenna found in the attic of her home several
boxes of items that seem to have been placed for storage in the 1950's.
This home is located on County Rd. 165 a few miles outside of
Higginsville, Mo. Most of the boxes contained magazines, novels and a
few house wares. This one box was quite interesting because it contained
about 43 old family pictures. Most of the pictures were unmarked except
for just a few that seemed to be the oldest. Several were tintypes
including the ones that I am sending you today. There was a large white
envelope that had a piece of tape on the outside which was written
"James and Mary Susan McDowell." The scanned pictures of James
and Mary Susan McDowell that I am sending you today were found in that
envelope. Several others had the names of the individuals but I could
not find the McDowell name on those. I told my sister that I would
attempt to find a relative to give these pictures to at which time I
began to look online at the web-site www.rootsweb.com. I toned a few of
them. Many of the pictures seemed to be related in respect to facial
features, posture etc. After visiting the West web-site, I can see that
your family would treasure them greatly. My sister Jenna has since moved
from the area and I will call her and see if I can get the address of
the house that she was living at the time. I remember it was a very
large nicely remodeled farmhouse with quite a few bedrooms, maybe
someone in your family would remember such a house and this would
explain who was the previous owner of this box of pictures. My husband
suspects the house was built in the 1880's and the pictures date between
1865-1885. The dates given on Travis's rootsweb site would appear to
support this. James and Susan would have been thirty to forty at the
time they were taken. Click on them for a larger view. |

Hand colorized
tintype |
Probably Mary Susan McDowell |
Hand colorized tintype identified as James McDowell, grandfather of Elmo West. |
This photo was also identified as James McDowell. |
|
This beautiful little picture was not identified, but it certainly looks like a teenaged Florence McDowell, mother of Elmo West. There is a strong resemblance to Elmo himself. |
Another unidentified picture, but judging by the book in her hand, perhaps she was a teacher. She looks a little like Mary Susan, so maybe she was a sister to Florence McDowell. |
This picture was identified as J.L.Whorskim. I do not know who he is, but maybe one day we will find out how he fits into our family. He was in Co.H. 49th M.H.G. I assume this was the Missouri Home Guard, during the Civil War. |
This picture was unidentified, but he looks so much like James that he almost has to be a son. That would make him the brother of Florence McDowell and the uncle of Elmo West. |
|
This is such a great old picture. This lady is posed in pretty much the same way all these ladies were, seated with a book in their hand. Maybe this lady is the mother of James McDowell or the mother of Mary Susan Davis McDowell. |

The children of Mary Susan Davis and James McDowell are: Minnie McDowell Fitch 1871-1938 I recently had the great pleasure of coming in contact with the daughter of Floyd C. McDowell. She sent me these wonderful pictures of not only her father, mother and brother, but also one of Charles S. McDowell. Thank you so much, Scottie. Click on the pictures for a larger view. |

| Floyd Coleman McDowell, brother of Florence McDowell and uncle of Elmo West. This is a very lovely portrait. He's young and very handsome. | Floyd C. McDowell in 1918. He served in the Navy during World War l. This was taken well before his daughter, Scottie, was born. | ||

Floyd C. McDowell Scottie says he was the best dad anyone could have. |
Floyd and Marie McDowell, 1958. It looks like Christmas morning. |

|
Scottie McDowell, first cousin of Elmo West. Floyd was one of the younger McDowell kids and Scottie came along fairly late in his life. |
This is John McDowell, son of Floyd and Marie McDowell, and first cousin to Elmo West. This picture was taken in 1958 when John was about 20 years old. I think John resembles the above picture of James McDowell. |

This is Charles S. McDowell, brother of Florence McDowell and uncle of Elmo West. This photo was taken about 1955. I think he looks a bit like Elmo. |
